What is the process for claiming UIF
Author: Julandie Scholtz (Swart)
The following are the steps to follow when claiming UIF after termination of your services:
STEP 1:
Determine if you meet the minimum qualification criteria for claiming UIF.
This depends on whether your services were voluntarily or involuntarily terminated. If you resigned or absconded, you do not qualify.
If you were dismissed, retrenched, your fixed-term contract ended, or your employer forced you to retire, you may qualify. Note that there is no retirement age unless your employer has a policy that you agreed to.
STEP 2:
Ensure that you are claiming within the 12-month prescribed period from the date of termination.
STEP 3:
Gather all your supporting documents, including UI.19, Salary Schedule Form, Certificate of Service, UI.2.1.1 (if you retire or take a voluntary retrenchment package), updated ID, and UI.2.8 (authorization to pay into your bank account). If you have had multiple employers in the past four years, you need to submit documents from all of them.
STEP 4:
Create a U filing profile and check that your declarations are correct.
STEP 5:
Submit your supporting documents as separate PDF attachments, ensuring they are clear, tidy, and labeled with your name, surname, ID number, and case number. Claims should take an average of 5-6 weeks to pay out, and bombarding DOL with emails will not speed up the process.
If you follow these steps correctly, you are 80% of the way through the claims process.
